Alban House Care Home, Ilfracombe, Devon
The brief
An architect had drawn up a concept of a Sensory Garden at this quality care home. Beach Hut Garden Services was asked to develop the idea and turn it into reality. It must challenge all the senses - Touch, Sight, Hearing, Taste and Smell, to have wide paths for wheelchair access and plenty of places to sit.
The Solution
After 5 months work the garden had been transformed into a fantastic place to sit and reflect whilst looking out across the Bristol Channel. Perhaps from the large patio extension complete with BBQ area or from the specially built benches constructed within the raised beds which in turn were made from new railway sleepers. The extensive planting bombards the senses and included mature shrubs, climbers such as Wisteria, Jasmin, Honeysuckle and Roses, a herb bed, great textures in the grasses section, fantastic colour for those of poor sight, and all year round interest. |

St Lawrence Primary School, Church Stretton, Shropshire
The brief
St Lawrence Primary School had a long thin area of their grounds which was left wasted and unused and the headmaster Mr. Langford wanted to incorporate it into the main playground. It also had to reflect the winning entry from a “design the school playground” competition run for the pupils.
The solution
The illusion of space was created by using a winding ‘path’ marked onto the tarmac. This also enabled a number of distinct ‘areas’ to be made including : vegetable planters, raised flower beds, a bird watching and feeding area, picnic tables, a weather station and a number of play activities such as Garden Draughts, ‘Gnome’ Skittles, and the ultimate - a 10m horizontal (safe) climbing wall. |

Mr & Mrs Stevens, The Old Farmyard, Kenley Rd, Harley, Shropshire
The brief
Mr & Mrs Stevens wanted to create a private country garden from the aftermath of their barn conversion building work and which also included their business premises. Their wish list included different places to sit at different points in the day, somewhere to house a hot tub, a BBQ area, and disguising an eyesore. Other key considerations included keeping the business separate from their private garden but without spoiling the fabulous views over the countryside to Wenlock Edge and the Long Mynd.
The solution
The completed garden offers a spacious lawn, a patio which runs the full length of the barn conversion, ample parking and unspoilt views of the beautiful surrounding countryside. |

Dr.Newell-Price
The brief
The Newell-Prices had lost the battle with weeds on their patio and needed it reclaiming.
The solution
Lift and relay a crazy paving patio making it more manageable with landscape fabric beneath to keep the weeds down and pointed with a cement mortar rather than with sand as previously.
"The weeds had completely taken over as the previous patio was laid on a sand base and with just sand in the joints. We are over the moon with the new patio - we can now sit and relax on it instead of battling with the weeds." Dr Newell-Price |
